He was conceived as Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone on July 9, 1925 in Bangalore, India. He started his career as a telephone operator at a Lever Brothers processing plant in Kolkata. Master Dutt was hired as a choreographer to work under a three-year contract with 'Prabhat Film Company' in Pune. He later went on to become an entertainer in the company and furthermore served as an assistant director. In 1944, he acted in a little role as Sri Krishna in the movie 'Chand'. In 1946, he served as an assistant director and choreographed dances for the film 'Murmur Ek Hain'. In 1947, the agreement with the film company ended and he was given the job of a freelance assistant with Baburao Pai. However, soon he was rendered unemployed and wrote short stories for 'The Illustrated Weekly of India', a local weekly English magazine. The defining moment in his life came when Dev Anand asked him to direct the movie 'Baazi' (1951) under his production company. Later, he directed several other movies, for example, 'Mr. what's more, Mrs. 55' (1955), 'Sailaab' (1956), and 'Pyaasa' (1957). In 1959, he made his most goal-oriented project 'Kaagaz Ke Phool' yet it proved to be a bitter disappointment in the cinematic world and he lost a great deal of money creating the film. 'Sahib Bibi 7Aur Ghulam' (1962), 'Pyaasa' (1957), 'Chaudvin Ka Chand' (1960), and 'Kagaz Ke Phool' (1959) are among his most notable films. In 1953, he married Geeta Dutt, a professional playback singer. The couple later separated because of his compulsive worker nature and mostly because of his rumored relationship with actress Waheeda Rehman. He died on October 10, 1964, from overconsumption of liquor and sleeping pills. It is as yet a mystery whether his death was a suicide or an accidental overdose.
